If you are going to a new location or traveling abroad you might wonder if the rules for bikinis are the same and if you will be able to wear your bikini as usual. Bikinis are allowed in many places, but there are also some places where bikinis are not allowed. If you live in a place where bikinis are used chances are that you have never even thought about the fact that they could be banned. However, some locations consider bikinis to be too revealing and inappropriate. This could be because the bikini is considered to be a sexualized article of clothing. After all, you are basically just wearing underwear. There could be several reasons why bikinis are banned. While we will not be able to cover all of them in this post we will outline the 2 main reasons. The 2 main reasons for not allowing bikinis are that (1) they might be seen as disrespectful against a certain culture or (2) a practical or functional reason. The most common reason for not allowing bikinis is some form of cultural rule practice or law. Practical reasons might be that the fabric is damaging or that the bikini doesn’t offer a certain feature that is needed. We’ll continue diving deeper into specific locations and occasions where people wonder if bikinis or swimsuits are allowed. Are bikinis allowed in Islam? The Quran does say that women should cover and show modesty in their clothing. This is interpreted differently among practicing Muslims. Some wear a burka while others “only” wear a hijab. However, few, if any, Muslims interpret this as begin OK to wear a bikini if you are a practicing Muslim. One should also note that this only goes for being in public. If a Muslim woman is at home with her husband, there is nothing saying that she can not wear a bikini. With that being said, there are big differences among Muslims today. It’s not common for more “moderate” Muslims to wear bikinis. To learn more on the subject we recommend this very well-written deep dive into Muslims and bikinis by Sayyida Shaheen Noor. Are bikinis allowed in Mosques? No, bikinis would not be allowed in any form of Mosque or other places of worship under Islam rules. The bikini would be considered revealing and disrespectful and you should not even consider wearing one if visiting a Mosque. When visiting a mosque, it is important to dress modestly out of respect for those who are praying. Wearing a bikini would be considered disrespectful and inappropriate, as it shows too much skin. In addition, bikini tops can be seen as sexualized and offensive to some. For these reasons, it is not allowed to wear a bikini in a mosque. As a Christian, you are not typically prohibited from wearing a bikini. There might be some locations where it is not allowed due to cultural reasons, but as a general rule, Christians are free to wear bikinis. Christians should practice modesty, but this does not necessarily mean that you can not show your skin. It is important to note that different denominations of Christianity might have different views on modesty. For example, some Catholics might be more conservative than Protestants when it comes to modesty. However, as a general rule, bikinis are allowed in Christianity. Are bikinis allowed in Church? In most Christian churches you should cover at least your knees and shoulders out fo respect. Wearing a bikini in Church would thereby not be allowed. There are, however, some more liberal Churches where the dress code is not as strict. In these churches, it might be allowed to wear a bikini. However, we don’t really see any need for one to wear a bikini to Church so we would recommend you to not do so. Are bikinis allowed in Buddhism? Buddhism does not have any strict rules when it comes to clothing. There are no specific scriptures that say whether or not you can wear a bikini. With that being said, it is generally accepted that you should dress modestly. This means that you should cover your chest and your legs. Wearing a bikini would therefore be allowed in Buddhism, as long as you are dressing modestly. Are bikinis allowed in Dubai? Dubai is a tricky country. On one hand, it’s a Muslim country with some very strict and conservative Muslim rules and regulations. On the other hand, it’s been very “westernized” and has a lot of rules not being upheld or at least being looked over most of the time. In Dubai, you should be aware that there might be big differences between what the laws and rules say and what is being implemented. Therefore you should be careful with things that might be against the law but are still allowed (most of the time) With that being said, bikinis are widely used and accepted in Dubai as long as you stay at the beach, pool area, or any other area where a bikini or swimsuit might be needed. Generally, you should not wear your bikini anywhere else like in a shopping mall, walking streets, or other public areas. This would attract attention very fast and could even lead to the police showing up as I experienced myself on a trip to Dubai in 2013.
