Since chafing is a real threat to your water-based holiday adventure, it’s important to see what all the available options are out there. There’s been a lot of discussion about preventative measures.
From keeping your equipment dry to using all sorts of lotions, jellies, and salves to help protect your skin. We covered a lot of these in our article below. These are just anti-chafing tips and tricks that can be done to try to prevent that all too painful chafing.
Again – it’s still a good idea to have a complete process in managing your chafing situation. There is no one built-in wonder solution that will 100% prevent you from chafing. It takes a few things to keep in mind, such as cleaning yourself properly as well as your swim trunks.
Now to be fair, there are some swim trunks out there that are built better than others when it comes to chafing in mind. These are the ones that will help build a nice foundation for chafing prevention but again are not a complete solution.
There are some swim trunks that are out there that specifically have an inside compression liner to help with your chafing issues. They are form-fitting to your legs and act as a preventative barrier against chafing. They will help block out that debris and dirt from collecting under your swim trunks, and they won’t have you sacrifice your movement or freedom of movement in any way.
The major drawback to these compression liners is that they’re so tight there’s a chance that air can actually get stuck inside of them, actually slowing down the drying process in some cases. As we are all starting to realize, that’s a big issue when it comes to preventing chafing. That extra water that’s there not drying, is slowly making the skin prone to abrasion and eventually chafing around the legs.
Yet these work really well if you will be spending a lot of time in the water, doing water sports such as surfing or jet skiing, and other types of aggressive water-based activities. These will help keep your motion free while at the same time providing much better protection against chafing than swim trunks with just a liner.
You can also use some of those balms and jellies underneath as the compression liners can help seal everything in and also you will have two layers of protection between the elements of nature causing your skin to weaken and enable that painful chafing.
Boxer briefs swim trunks
There are more and more boxer brief swim trunk combos being made available out there. Before this was happening, there was a select population who were combining their swim trunks with boxer briefs. The main issue was that most boxer briefs can come with cotton as the main material. Cotton is not a moisture-wicking material. It actually is a great absorbent and loves to soak in all of that saltwater and other debris that can get in there from nature.
That means there’s a good chance that wearing boxer briefs under your swim trunks will actually lead to a faster likelihood of chafing, as well as feeling extremely uncomfortable and heavy, as the weight of the water will be absorbed by the boxer briefs.
Those boxer briefs that come instead as lining, are made from the same moisture-wicking material as common swim trunks. They come in between regular swim trunks and swim trunks with compression liners. Instead of feeling as if you’re about to go into a cycling competition with compression liner swim trunks, these are a lot more relaxed and offer great flexibility. They’re usually made with a blend of polyester and spandex, a perfect combination of moisture-wicking and freedom of movement.
Don’t forget the core elements
Remember, just because you decide to have liner underneath your swim trunks or wear polyester boxer briefs under your board shorts, that will not always prevent chafing from happening. That doesn’t mean that they don’t help immensely. Some of the best parts about compression liner swim trunks or boxer briefs swim trunks is that you will be able to tell with ease whether they are a good fit or not.
That’s one of the most important things to consider when it comes to selecting these types of items. You will know immediately how the fit is, and if the swim trunks move with your body or against your body.
That is one of the biggest causes of finding the right swim trunk for you, is finding the one that fits perfectly. It’s something a lot of us simply go to a swim trunks section for, pick something that falls into our category of size, and buy it without a second thought.
That’s really where the chafing issues begin, and one of the areas to consider so you’re not trying to cut out the mesh lining that’s hurting you, or worse, wearing additional layers of clothing (such as cotton boxer briefs) that will weigh you down, make you feel uncomfortable, and basically cause you to feel miserable and chafe regardless.
