Most swim trunks and board shorts have some form of a drawstring. The question of how to tie swim trunks or board shorts might seem very straightforward, you just tie them right? However, as you’ll see in this post there is much more to it than just tying your swim trunks.
Nothing is as relaxing as a day in the sun at the beach. We all love to spend time around the ocean and hear the waves roll up on the beach. Wearing your favorite swim trunks and a white shirt and you are ready for the day. The last thing you want to worry about is the tie on your swim trunks.
That’s why it’s important to get the tie right in the first place, so you don’t have to worry about it until your swim trunks go off at night. However, tying your swim trunks is one of those things you are not supposed to notice, and if you do, you’ve done something wrong.
Let us guide you through all the questions regarding how to tie swim trunks so you never have to worry about it again!
Swim trunks can have the drawstring either on the outside or on the inside of the waistband. There are a few differences in how you want to tie your trunks depending if the knot will be on the outside or inside of your waistband.
The most common is that the drawstring is on the outside. To then tie your swim trunks you simply pull the strings as tight as you would like the waistband to be and then tie a bow. This is the classic way to tie swim trunks, just as you do with your shoes. Make sure to tie the bow the right way. Doing it the wrong way might look the same at first but the tie will loosen up much easier.
First, make a loop with one string and then take the other string and go around the loop. Now pull the second string through the hole you created when making the loop (but don’t pull it all the way through). Take that same string and now go around the loop again but this time pull it all the way through. You might have to adjust the knot a little bit so it sits flat against your waistband but other than that your swim trunks are now tied and the knot will sit slim against your waist.
Even with the drawstring on the inside of your swim trunks, most people are happy with doing the same bow as if the drawstring is on the outside. However, this is quite bulky and many guys prefer a slimmer knot when tying their swim trunks on the inside.
Quick tip: If you tie your swim trunks knot horizontally instead of vertically the knot will be flatter. This is great when the drawstring is on the inside of your swim trunks.
Why it’s important to tie your swim trunks correctly
The tie on a pair of swim trunks is more important than you might think. Ties on sweatpants or regular shorts are often just ascetic and aren’t really needed at the end of the day. However, with swim trunks, it’s another story.
First of all, once your swim trunks or board shorts get wet they will become much heavier. If you haven’t tied your trunks correctly you can be sure to lose your swim trunks as soon as you try to stand up. This is not what you want at the pool club or after falling off your board.
Secondly, when wearing your swim trunks you are most likely jumping in the waves, going down a water slide, or surfing the waves. These are all activities where you move around a lot and you really want your swim trunks to stay in place. That’s why the right way to tie swim trunks is key.
As you see, not tying your swim trunks correctly can be very embarrassing at the beach. So make sure you tie your swim trunks properly before leaving home!
How to tie board shorts (with 4 holes)
Board shorts are tied in a particular way with 4 holes. This is unique to board shorts and most other swim trunks are not tied this way. The way of tying board shorts is not the most intuitive and could therefore be challenging if you’ve never done it before. That’s why we’ll show you how to tie board shorts with 4 holes.
There are 3 steps to tie board shorts:
Put the drawstring from the back of your bottom holes
Tie the first end across from the back
Tie the second end across from the back
These things are often the easiest to visualize. That’s why we’ve created a simple infographic on how to tie board shorts with 4 holes!
Tying board shorts is very easy when you know how to do it. So don’t be afraid to take the draw sting out of your board shorts and tie it back together. Once you got a hold of it you’ll know it for good!
Making sure you tie your board shorts is important because it will prevent them from falling off when you’re in the water. When you tie your board shorts it will also make sure they don’t get caught on something when you’re surfing or paddling.
Tying board shorts is an essential part of every surfer’s routine and it’s something you should learn how to do as soon as possible!
How to tie swim trunks tighter
Sometimes you have a pair of swim trunks that are just a little too big. Maybe you’ve lost some weight or perhaps your swim trunks have stretched after many trips to the beach. Whatever the reason, you might end up wanting to tie your swim trunks tighter.
There is a fantastic way to tie swim trunks tighter by doing a special knot. This way of tying also makes it possible to adjust how tight we want our shorts. You can loosen or tighten the trunks throughout the day as you need.
To tie your swim trunks tighter first make an ”&” figure with the left drawstring. Then with your right drawstring, make a loop and insert it into the nearest side of the ”&”. Continue to pass the right drawstring over the left side of the ”&”. Finally, pull it all tight.
By gathering up your left drawstring you can now adjust the waist size by pulling your right drawstring.
To begin, you should lay your swim trunks on a flat surface. The first time through, you want to be able to see all of the holes and where you’re putting the string. Then, once you feel more comfortable, you can try it while wearing the swim trunks.
The next step is unlacing the swim trunks. You should have no problem unlacing your swim trunks, and the string should be easy to reinsert into the holes. You’re now ready to begin re-lacing your swim trucks.
For the purposes of this article, the side that typically faces your body is the ‘back.’ In contrast, the side that faces away from your body is the ‘front.’ You can use this method even if you’re looking up how to tie swim trunks with six or more holes for the lacing.
You will now run the string through the bottom hole on the left side as you’re looking at the shorts. You should do this from back to front, just like you would lace a shoe. You want to pull enough string through that you do not need to worry about needing to redo this.
Then, take the other end of the string and run it through the top hole from back to front. This step takes place on the same side of your swim trunks as the first. When you are done, you should even out the lengths of each string side.
Now, you want to thread the string through the other side. Beginning at the bottom hole, take your string length straight across and through the bottom hole on the other side from back to front. Repeat this step with the top string length going through the top hole.
From there, you can use the same knot you use to tie shoes to ensure a tight tie on your swim trunks. That’s all the necessary steps, and you can now untie the knot, slide the swim trunks on, and enjoy the water confident in how you tie your swim trunks.
Some swim trunks with drawstrings are secured in the back. This means that while you can tighten the swim trunks you can actually pull the whole string out. Unfortunately, most swim trunks do not have a secure drawstring.
Usually, this should not be a problem, but there are some cases when you might have accidentally pulled the drawstring out. This could for example happen when washing your swim trunks in the washer.
So then you wonder, how do I put the drawstring back into my swim trunks?
This is done with the help of a large safety pin.
Fasten the safety pin to one of the ends of your drawstring
Locate the eyelid and insert the safety pin
Move the pin around the waistline by pulling the fabric together
Continue around the whole waistline until the pin is out on the other side.
Adjust the drawstring to have the same length on both sides
Now you have put the drawstring back into your swim trunks!
